About Granddaddy Purple

Granddaddy Purple (GDP) is a classic indica cultivar that gained prominence in Northern California around 2003, popularized by breeder Ken Estes. It is widely documented as a cross between Purple Urkle and Big Bud, with subsequent backcrossing used to refine the genetics. The lineage combines the distinct berry-heavy profile and coloration of Purple Urkle with the dense, high-yielding flower structure of Big Bud. The strain is noted for its nostalgic aromatic profile, which features notes of ripe grape, dark berries, and sweet fruit, balanced by an earthy, floral, and peppery finish. Reported experiences typically begin with a euphoric, hazy onset that transitions into profound physical relaxation and sleepiness. Its status as a defining purple cultivar was solidified when it took first place for Best U.S. Indica Flower at the 2015 Denver High Times Cannabis Cup.

Plant characteristics

The plants are characterized by a short, compact stature with tight internodal spacing. The flowers are dense and chunky, displaying a color palette that shifts from forest green to deep violet and purple, accented by fiery orange pistils and a heavy coating of trichomes. During the flowering cycle, the foliage often exhibits vibrant shades of purple, blue, green, and orange.
