THE DISPENSE STRAIN GUIDE

The Black

hybrid

The Black is a hybrid strain developed by Dr. Dank for Deep Ellum Seed Co. in 2005, recognized for its complex, multi-regional lineage and a history marked by disputes over its origins.

About The Black

The Black serves as the flagship offering from the Colorado-based breeder Deep Ellum Seed Co., which traces its roots to Texas. Created by breeder Dr. Dank in 2005, the strain is a complex hybrid derived from indigenous Mexican genetics sourced from Michoacán and Oaxaca, crossed with Afghan and Green Vietnamese varieties. The strain's history is noted for a conflict involving a Canadian seed bank that allegedly claimed the genetics as its own. While the original developers initially bred out purple phenotypes during the stabilization process, these traits eventually re-emerged through backcrossing and were subsequently embraced. The name is attributed to the plant's dark foliage and the clandestine history of its parentage. BC Bud Depot, a Canadian seed bank, has characterized the strain as having a distinctively sweet flavor profile, while other reports describe the smoke as pungent and chemical-forward with notes of earthy spice. Users have reported that the experience begins with a euphoric lift that transitions into a state of deep relaxation. The strain was named a Top Ten Strain of the Year by High Times magazine in 2008.

Plant characteristics

The plants are reported to reach a medium height despite the strain's sativa-leaning heritage. The foliage is noted for its dark coloration.
