About Northern Lights

Northern Lights is a cornerstone of cannabis genetics, established well before the era of modern branding. Its origins trace back to breeding work in the United States, often attributed to Washington state, before Nevil Schoenmakers refined and distributed various selections through The Seed Bank in the Netherlands during the 1980s. Sensi Seeds later maintained and continued the line. While the exact lineage remains partially undocumented, the family is widely considered to be predominantly Afghani with reported Thai influence.

Because Northern Lights refers to a broad family of genetics rather than a single, uniform cut, expressions can vary. The most famous of these is Northern Lights #5. The flavor profile is typically characterized by earthy sweetness, warm herbal spice, and woody undertones, occasionally accented by subtle fruit or floral notes. Users frequently report a happy, settled headspace that transitions into pronounced physical relaxation, often leading to sleepiness, making it a classic choice for evening use.

Plant characteristics

Plants in the Northern Lights family are known for dense, resinous flowers and substantial branching. While often associated with manageable indoor growth and relatively quick flowering times—some photoperiod selections finish in approximately 45–50 days—the specific height and development schedule depend heavily on the breeder and whether the version is photoperiod or autoflowering.
