Cannatonic
Cannatonic is a renowned hybrid strain from Spain’s Resin Seeds, widely recognized as one of the first varieties developed specifically for high-CBD content.
About Cannatonic
Introduced around 2008 by Resin Seeds, Cannatonic—often referred to as the "CBD Queen"—is a cross of Reina Madre and NYC Diesel. The strain gained early recognition by placing 3rd in the Sativa category at the 2008 High Times Cannabis Cup. Resin Seeds identifies three primary phenotypes: one with a 1:1 THC-to-CBD ratio, one with high CBD and low THC, and one with a high THC-to-CBD ratio.
Cannatonic has been highly influential in the development of CBD-rich genetics. Notable phenotypes include Cannatonic #4, Cannatonic X, Cannatonic B, and the inbred line (IBL) Highlo, developed by House of the Great Gardener. The strain SuperCBDx, developed by the breeder PJ, is also noted as an early phenotype. Genofarm later refined a version of the strain reported to reach a 26:1 CBD-to-THC ratio.
Its genetic influence is extensive, serving as a foundation for numerous hybrids, including Cancer’s Nightmare (Sin City Seeds), CannaBerry (Apothecary Genetics), Hawkeye (RedEyed Genetics), Hazy Med CBD (Poppa Pain Strains), VCDC (Moxie Seeds), and Dieseltonic (Resin Seeds). It is also a parent to hemp varieties such as Cherry Wine and The Wife, with Resin Seeds estimating that 80% or more of American, Swiss, and Italian hemp lineages contain Cannatonic genetics.
Plant characteristics
The breeder reports that Cannatonic exhibits Indica-like growth patterns with a flowering period of 63-70 days. The plants are noted for being resistant to both pests and powdery mildew. Aromas are described as a range of strawberry, cherry, mandarin peel, and grape, with notes of haze and diesel; myrcene is identified as the dominant terpene.
